Bringing Historic Garments to Life

Digital representations of threedimensional objects are increasingly allowing more creative methods for engaging audiences with museum objects and cultural heritage. 3D models provide an interactive image that allows students and researchers to explore objects on their own. Digital models provide viewers the chance to digitally ‘handle’ an object, often, as in the case of historic garments, those that are not on view. One can move the model with a cursor or touchscreen to view different perspectives, change the light situation, and get a sense of the texture and dimensions of an object. Different scanning technologies and data capturing techniques, such as Structure from Motion (SFM), can illustrate different types of information on objects. They can be combined to use the best results from more than one data capturing technique.
