Virtual Couture

Digital Reconstruction of Fashion

The project “Virtual Couture. 3D digital reconstruction and animation” is dedicated to the digital reconstruction and animation of dress ensembles from the Museum of Decorative Arts’ fashion collection ad funded by the Research and Competence Centre for Digitization Berlin (digiS). This approach, executed by Katrin Lindeman (curator), Sabine de Günther (Research) and Andrea Döring (Design), aims to offer the potential to integrate the digital 3D view and the dynamic version of the models into the presentation of the objects in the museum. Four dress designs are for the first time under investigation and contextualized in the realm of art and fashion history. Research is executed on their origin, material and provenance. An english cream-colored chemise from the late 18th century, a salmon-colored evening dress Jeanne Lanvin, an evening cape by Gabrielle Chanel – both from the 1920s – and an evening dress in the style of a shift dress, designed by Alix Grès around 1967.

They are measured and reconstructed in the 3D digital environment. This includes a precise pattern drawing, a visual representation in 360° views with and without an avatar and an animation that shows the dynamics of the fabric and its specific properties in motion. All digitized ensembles, patterns and work steps are provided to ensure reusability.
